Quick Answer
Visit Chongqing in spring (March–May) or autumn (October–November): temperatures sit roughly between 15–28°C, the skyline is at its clearest, and the big sights are walkable all day. Summer (June–September) is famously hot — often 35°C+ — but it's also when the night city and hotpot culture peak, and mountain escapes like Wulong and Fairy Mountain run 8–10°C cooler. Winter (December–February) is damp-cold and foggy rather than freezing: few crowds, moody photographs, hotpot season in full swing.

Season Playbooks
- Spring: the full programme — city walking, Wulong's green karst, Dazu in soft light. Book guides 1–2 weeks out.
- Summer: flip the day. Sights at opening, long lunch, siesta like a local, then the city after 7 p.m. when it becomes itself. Put Wulong/Fairy Mountain (cooler by altitude) mid-trip.
- Autumn: photographers' season — after-rain clarity and blue-hour skylines; Golden Week (Oct 1–7) is the one window to avoid or book everything far ahead.
- Winter: fog turns the skyline into ink painting; Dazu and Wulong are quiet; hotpot goes from food to heating system. Pack for damp cold, not snow.
Crowd Calendar (the dates that actually matter)
Chinese New Year week, May 1–5, and October 1–7 are peak domestic travel: sights queue, hotels price up, good guides book out. If your trip lands there, reserve early and start sights at opening time — our itineraries already do.
FAQ
- Worst month? Mid-August for city walking; late January for visibility. Both are still fine with the right plan (mountains in August, museums and food in January).
- Does it snow? Rarely in the main city; Fairy Mountain (Wulong) can hold snow in January–February.
- When is Wulong best? April–June for green water and full waterfalls; September–October for clarity. The Bridges run year-round.
