Quick Answer
Chongqing is a mountain megacity at the meeting of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, famous for extreme terrain: light-rail trains through residential buildings, 11-storey cliff complexes, and streets where the ground floor is someone else's 22nd floor. Give it at least 2 days for the city itself; 3–4 days lets you add a UNESCO day trip — Wulong Karst's stone bridges or the Dazu Rock Carvings. Most visitors from Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas can now enter visa-free (30-day unilateral visa-free for many passports, or 240-hour visa-free transit) — see our visa guide 240-Hour Visa-Free Guide. Best months: March–May and October–November.

The City by Layers (how locals read it)
- Yuzhong Peninsula — the old core between the two rivers: Jiefangbei, Hongyadong, the cableway, shelter tunnels. Where almost everyone starts.
- The north bank (Jiangbei/Guanyin Bridge side) — skyline views back at Yuzhong, Raffles City's horizontal skyscraper best seen from across the river.
- The south bank (Nan'an) — the classic night-view terraces and old treaty-port lanes.
- Shapingba (west) — Ciqikou old town and the university quarter; the porcelain-and-teahouse Chongqing.
- Beyond the city — Wulong (3 hours, karst) and Dazu (2 hours, carvings): both inside Chongqing municipality, both full-day trips.

Practical Essentials
- Stairs are the city. Pack shoes you'd hike in; "flat" routes need planning (tell us about mobility and we plan honestly).
- Spice is real. Chongqing hotpot's mala is numbing, not just hot. Beginners: order the split pot (yuanyang) and say "wei la" (mild). food guide
- Fog and angles. The skyline photographs best after rain and at blue hour; winter fog is atmosphere, not bad luck.
- Connectivity. Your usual apps may not work in China; set up eSIM/VPN before landing, and keep our WhatsApp chat as your lifeline — we answer in writing within 24 hours, usually far faster.
FAQ
- Is Chongqing worth visiting, or just a stopover to Chengdu/the Yangtze? It was a stopover; it isn't anymore. The terrain city has no equivalent in China — Chengdu is flat and mellow, Chongqing is vertical and loud. Do both if you can; if forced to choose and you like drama, choose Chongqing.
- Is it safe? Chongqing is a big Chinese city with big-city safety: violent crime against tourists is rare; your real risks are stairs when wet, traffic at chaotic crossings, and spice-related regret.
- Do I need a guide? Not legally — but the city's layered roads defeat map apps (they can't tell which floor you're on), signage is Chinese-first, and the sights carry stories that don't translate themselves. One guided day upgrades the rest of your trip.
